Why Aren't These Guys Playing Those Guys

This was a very convincing article on bringing back a consolation game. She starts off by getting your attention by saying that we live in a "cutthroat, conniving, get-outa-my-way, success-obsessed and insanely competitive society " that requires nothing buy a number one. Then goes on saying that the only dignified way to go out after losing in the semi-finals of whatever you are in whether it be the Final Four or Conference Finals in the NFL the on respectable way to go out is to pack you bag and go home. Then she completely changes her train of though to saying why don't we have a consolation game. She uses an interesting fact that the last consolation game in the NCAA men's division I was University of Virgina defeating Louisiana State University in 1981. She then uses things that are in our everyday society such as Mr. Rogers and Donald Trump's line, "You're Fired!" to say how society has changed to what it is today. I thought this was a very good way to keep the reader's attention and relate to the audience. She then goes on to say that television executives believed that all the attention needed to be on the championship game and told other reasons of why the game was scratched.
She finishes by telling what good would come from bringing back the game such as the excitement that the game would be due to the fact that the players would fight just like they were fighting for the number one spot. And then related it to Stephen J. Dubner, co-author of "Freakanomics" saying that there should be a consolation game in the NFL. "I'd imagine there would be plenty of interest," Dubner wrote, "and plenty of money to be made for the NFL."
I really liked the article because she related it to the everyday reader. She started off strong to pull me in and used everyday culture kept me reading. Then she related it to other sports and backed it up with information from high ranking officials in the sports world. It was very well written and put together.

I think the team that wins definitely deserves the glory of their victory but a consolation game could be a good idea. Why not let those teams play one more time; its only a game, right? It seems like the author knows who her audience is and strategies to keep their attention. I don't think that the consolation game would take away from the championship game at all. In fact, I would think it would be another chance for them to make some more money.
