Annotated Bibliography on Prison Systems

Bayliss, Phil. "Learning Behind Bars: Time to Liberate Prison Education." Studies in the Education of Adults 35 (2003): 157-172. Academic Search Complete. EBSCO. 17 Apr. 2008.

The journal article, Learning behind bars: time to liberate prison education discusses education in prison systems in the UK. The importance of education in UK prisons has recently been brought back into the attention of the UK government. Prisons in western European countries have become more and more crowded. This could be due to the fact that a lot of the people in the prisons are people who were released but reenter within two years of being out of prison. The article discusses the UK’s past, present, and future of prisoner education.
I think that this source was very useful. By giving an overview of the education system in the UK the article offers valuable information that could be compared to the United States Prison systems. I thought this was an excellent article that did a good job of discussing the education of prisoner in the past, today and in the future.

Browning, Jane. "Coming to Terms with Prison Growth." Corrections Today 69 (2007): 18-19. Academic Search Complete. EBSCO. 16 Apr. 2008.

This journal discusses acts and principles that are in action, such as the Higher Education Act, to help improve educational systems in prisons. The Second chance act is a bill that went through congress that affects the education to people in prison systems. The bill supported research and coordination of rehabilitation involving prisoners who are re entering prisons. Economic funding for educational prison programs is also discussed.
Overall I thought this article was really well written. It did a good job of explaining all the things that are being done to better prison system education; however, because parts of these articles are outdated it is hard to say how some of the things that were being done turned out. There was some information in the article that I found to be a little confusing and not useful’ but overall it was very informative.

"Facts About Prisons and Prisoners." The Sentencing Project. 17 Apr. 2008 .
This website includes a lot of statistics. It discusses the statistics of the growing correctional system and people who are in prisons and jails. The number of people who are entering prisons is growing.
This website was very informative by giving good statistical facts. There was really nothing else included on the website except statistics.

Garcia, Carla. "Education Offered to Prisoners While Incarcerated At CNMCF." Valencia County News Bulletin. 11 May 2005. 17 Apr. 2008 http://www.news-bulletin.com/news/51015-05-11-05.html.

This article discusses how prisoners who have been better educated have a statistically better chance of not reentering prisons. Bob Williams, director of education at the Central New Mexico Correctional Facility, is quoted a lot throughout the entire article. This article discuses the educational opportunities offered to the prisoners at Central New Mexico Correctional Facility and the results that have come from these opportunities.
The statistics in this article seemed to be very reliable and very convincing. I thought this article was good because it gave a good example of a prison system’s educational system that is working well for the betterment of society.

Hilde, Hetland. "Educational Background in a Prison Population." Journal of Correctional Education (2007): 1-8. http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa4111/is_200706/ai_n19432161/pg_5.

The educational background of prisoners shows that high school drop outs are more prevalent in prisons than highly educated individuals. There are currently studies begin done to find patterns in the educational backgrounds of prisoners. There has been as increase in the number of prisoners who are choosing to receive higher education this shows promising results. The article goes on to explain the education system that has been developed in Europe.
The article did a good job of presenting facts with regard to educational background of prisoners. By including detailed information into the prison system of other countries it allows the reader to see what the US may or may be doing wrong.

Prisoners 'Need Better Education' BBC News UK. 31 Mar. 2005. 16 Apr. 2008 http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/education/4395349.stm.

The number of inmates who lack the educational level needed to obtain most jobs is astonishing. This article discusses those who will re enter prison once being freed as well as and those who will not be able to find jobs when released because of the lack of qualifications. If prisons were to have better education then some of these issues would be prevented.
This article did an excellent job of getting straight to the point of why education is needed in prisons. While it did not have many facts or statistical information it was a good start to researching.

Rafter, Nicole, and Debra Stanley. Prisons in America. Santa Barbara: ABC-CLIO Inc., 1999.

The book Prisons in America thoroughly explains the prison systems in the United States. The book is divided into chapters each discussing different aspects of the prison system. The first Chapter discusses the history of prison systems in detail. Another chapter is about issues and controversies regarding the prison system. The documents and statistics chapter is a very informative portion of the book. It includes things such as court cases and amendments involved in the operation of prisons.
I found this book to be very well organized. Basically any aspect of the prison systems was included in the book and could be found by looking through the table of contents. I found the small portion of the book about rehabilitation to be most useful for my paper, but all parts of the book were very informative.

Roberts, Albert R. Sourcebok on Prison Education. Springfeild: Charles C Thomas, 1971.

Sourcebook on Prison Education discusses education in prison systems throughout America. The first chapter discusses the history of education by explaining that by offering education to prison inmates it allows for more of a chance for the inmates to become successful people in society. The second chapter gives multiple examples of inmates who are currently involved in college level education while in prison. Currently about 10 percent of inmates are involved in these college courses. Vocational education, social education, and recreation in prison system are also discussed. Research about correctional education is also included.
I thought this was an excellent source. The book discussed in detail all the aspects of the education in a prison system. The only thing that I thought was bad about the book was that some of the book could have been very outdated because it was published in 1971.
