Annotated Bibliography on the Drinking Age

Annotated Bibliography

Alex Campbell

Ford, Gene. "Why We Should Lower the Drinking Age to 19." Alcohol Problems and Solutions. 1 Jan. 2007. 17 Apr. 2008 .

This is an article written by a very credible source about lowering the drinking age. He explains how his teen years went, and gives reasons why he think they should lower the age based on what happens to teens. He also gives scientific evidence to back up his argument.

This web site article will be useful because it's a definite bias for changing the law. The site also gives reference to his books he has written, which might be another good source of information for this topic. The only downside to this source is that it is very, very biased.

Heather, Nick, and Tim Stockwell. The Essential Handbook of Treatment and Prevention of Alcohol Problems. Hoboken: Wiley, 2004. 14 Apr.-May 2008 .

This book is about how to treat people if they have alcohol abuse problems. It talks about recovery methods, their effects, and many other things.

I think that this will be a useful source because so many young teens seem to abuse alcohol when they get the chance. The book talks about people who went through all of those stages and how to help others you see going through it. It even has a part about how you can try to prevent alcohol problems.

Hempelman, Kathleen A. Teen Legal Rights. Westport: Greenwood P, 2000. 15 Apr.-May 2008 .

This book is mainly about the legal rights you have as a teenager. It talks about getting your license at 16, getting a job, and of course, alcohol and drugs. It mentions the legal drinking age and specifically talks about drug abuse among teens.

I think this book will be useful because it presents a different view point. The author isn't completely against underage drinking, but seems to focus more on abuse. I think a lot of people think the two go hand and hand and no one really looks at underage drinking as being a little alright, so long as they don't abuse it.

Johnson, Alex. "Debate on Lower Drinking Age Bubbling Up." MSNBC. 14 Aug. 2007. 17 Apr. 2008 .

This is an online article about a debate held to lower the drinking age. It explains a petition that is being driven by the National Youth Rights Association is proposing to lower the legal drinking age.

This source is useful because it contains an interview and quotes from a credible person. It even goes into detail about the different drinking laws in different states in the U.S. The article presents many different topics having to do with underage drinking along with what people support what sides and interviews from both sides.

"STATE WATCH." Alcoholism & Drug Abuse Weekly 20 (2008): 8. Academic Search Complete. EBSCO. LSU, Baton Rouge. 15 Mar.-Apr. 2008. Keyword: Underage Drinking.

This article is about a meeting held in Michigan by a substance abuse coalition. The meeting seemed to focus primarily on the parental role in underage drinking. They were trying to encourage the awareness of underage drinking to the nation.

This will be a very useful article because it is very current. It includes actions and opinions of people that deal with underage drinking on a day to day basis. The fact that it is current helps a lot, current events help back up a recently written paper a lot better than events mentioned that happened a long time ago.

"UMADD." UMADD. 17 Apr. 2008. MADD. 17 Apr. 2008 .

This is a branch off site from MADD. UMADD is for younger kids/teens that abuse alcohol. They have many different activities and ways you can join them on their website.

This will be a useful source because it is another different way to look at underage drinking. They narrow their focus groups to college students, middle school students and elementary students. There is loads of information to be found here, you can even compare the different groups based on the facts given.

"Who Takes Up Cause of Youth Binge Drinking." Alcoholism & Drug Abuse Weekly 18 (2006): 8. Academic Search Complete. EBSCO. LSU, Baton Rouge. 15 Mar.-Apr. 2008. Keyword: Underage Drinking.

This is another article that talks about a meeting held by the public that reports on the issue of youth binge drinking. It was held in New Zealand by the World Health Organization. They say that youth binge drinking is one of the greatest threats to health globally.

This article was helpful because the meeting was held just as New Zealand was thinking about lowering its legal drinking age. It will be useful to compare what happened in New Zealand, the reasons they were thinking about lowering, and the statistics of youth drinking to all of those in the United States. It might be able to help you predict what will happen if the United States enforces a lower drinking age with someone to compare it to who has done this before.
