Ink Before you Vote

This article talks starts off with the author talking about the wearing of his tattoos over time. He had one tattoo that said “Carpe Diem”, and after 20 years of having it, it wasn’t looking the way it used to. He went to see if a man named Doodle could fix it for him, and as he was getting his tattoo, Doodle was telling him about what he thought about the presidential election. He said had never voted before, but he planed to vote for Obama for the 2008 election. He also said that even though he thinks Obama is the best choice, if he gets voted into office, he thinks Obama will be assassinated by an angry racist. Doodle said “racism is still an ugly thing in this country” and he thinks it’s really sad. The author finished up his tattoo appointment and went home to his wife. He told her what he talked about with the tattoo artist and she said one of the students in her class was saying that as well. That made the author think about how much courage Obama has and how he is taking a chance for his country.
I agree that racism is still alive and present in the United States, and it’s a shame. There are so many great people with different cultures and ethnic backgrounds that you would never get the chance to know if you we’re to busy hating them for no reason. I also don’t think that being black has anything to do with a person’s ability to do a job. Obama could be a really great leader, but he won’t get a fair chance if he’s shunned because of racism. The author brings up a really good point that I’m passionate about. He did it in an interesting way by tying the tattoo words to the moral of his story. Even though it wasn’t an aggressive argument, the article still got the issue out there and I really enjoyed reading it.

That is a very cool story. I also like the tattoo beginning and the sudden topic change; it definitely roped me in. Additionally, I pray that I am right in disagreeing with people in thinking that Obama might get assassinated for being black. Perhaps young and idealistic, but I thought we were past this kind of depravity.

I also like how this article started off with a story, and then began talking about the issue. That is one way to get readers to pay attention ot what you have to say. I believe this article is a little extreme in believing Obama will be assassinated; however, I do see the point the author is trying to make. Although being a little extreme, I believe this was an effective way to present the issue.
