Safeguarding Electronic Voting

New York Times
4 April 2008
Author Unknown

This article starts out by bringing up the chaos in the voting-recount in the Florida 2000 election. There is a possibility this may reoccur in the upcoming election but instead due to electronic voting problems. After the 2000 election, Congress allowed states to replace the previous used machines, which sometimes did not record votes and even change votes cast. Studies have also found that these machines are also open to theft. The writer states the answer to this massive problem, which is to record every vote on paper. Some states have enacted the paper trail usage, known as the Holt Bill, while others still have not, leaving them vulnerable to false votes towards the election.
I thought this article was very informative providing a solution to a problem that needs to be addressed in all fairness. However, I thought the author sounded less credible than he or she could have been. It did not go into detail about the past problems but rather just an overview. Overall, the article flowed well and provided a good amount of information.

Wow! This could lead to a big problem in the upcoming election. I think that the Holt Bill should definitely be used in all states as a back up. I wish the author would have provided more information on what else was being done to ensure that the voting process remained safe. This issue definitely needs to be looked into.

You would think the problem of the 2000 election would have been solved by now, especially since we have been through another election and it was relatively successful. Perhaps the author could have commented on why this wasn't an issue back in the 2004 election.

I remember the recount of the 2000 election, but I didn't really understand why it was happening. If there is a possibility of the same thing happening in the 2008 elections, something definitely needs to be done to insure that it does not happen again. Some people feel like voting is a hassle anyway, and if they have to re-vote, I'm sure the percent of people voting will go down. This could definitely affect the outcome of the election.
