Unkept Promises in Darfur

No author identified.
New York Times

"Nobody pretends that bringing a stable peace to Darfur will be easy. The conflict involves not just the janjaweed and the Sudanese Army but also rival Darfur rebels and militias. Underlying it all is a desperate competition between nomads and farmers for land and water in a parched region. There is no hope at all until a credible and credibly armed peacekeeping force is deployed." As everyone knows, from either the tv or newspapers, there is a massive genocide going on in Africa. These atrocities have not only been killing African people, but also causing them to leave their homes and relocate to an area that they are not accustomed to. This author feels like a direct organized action should be taken to aid these people. He states that "caring is not enough." While I agree with him, he does not lay out a way in which it can be done. It seems to me that the problem has already been identified, the solution seems to be the problem. While I liked this article because it called for change, it did not present a way to make the changes possible.

I also agree with the author in that we need to take some immediate action. You hear a lot about darfur and ways people want to help but it seems like nothing is really happening. Also, the author could not actually make a military plan that would come into action but if he got you thinking about darfur then I think he did a good job.

I agree too that there must be something done soon about this problem. This part of the world has seen this sort of unrest before. The events taking place in Rwanda were similar to these; people had to flee the country and there were many deaths. The international community finally stepped in but way too late; it appears that they are doing this again. Hopefully action will be taken soon.
