Behind the Abortion Decline

New York Times
January 26, 2008
Author Unknown

This article talks about how the United States is having less abortion rates each year. However, progress would be more if unwanted pregnancies were prevented in the first place. One in five pregnancies in 2005 were terminated by an abortion. Many opponents of abortion fight to make it harder for a young woman to receive an abortion. Some clinics now require counseling before the abortion. Even though some fight to make it more difficult to receive an abortion, facts actually point to a reduction in abortion among states that allow abortions easily. These states provide excellent sex education providing contraception rather than just going about the abstinence only approach. Therefore, the states that provide preventative methods and proper knowledge of sex are more beneficial to young women rather than postponing abortions, which might only hurt the carrier of the child. However, this reduction in abortion rates might also be due to the new drug RU-486, which allows the mother to end their pregnancy in the first week without surgery.
I thought this article was very informative, providing many relative facts to support the statements. However, I thought the author could have provided more information or go more into detail. The flow of the article was good and easy to follow. Overall, it was a good article providing information on topic that needs to be brought attention to our society today.

Abortion can be a heated topic and I respected how the author stated facts and not his opinion. It appears that he did not attempt to sway the readers' view, but that he just wanted the information out there. In today's society that can be refreshing.

I also agree that the author seems unbiased and provides alot of facts that I didn't know. I think it is great that abortion is declining and it seems that the author is providing a lot of positive facts and not dwelling on the negative.

This author seems to have been well educated on this issue. Abortion is an issue which affects not only our society but the women who have the abortions. It is good to see that the abortions rates are declining and that the author had valuable facts to provide.

That is great that abortion rates are declining; however, I believe that a large part of this is due to the growing use of birth control among women, which prevents a pregnancy altogether. I would have liked to see some statistics to see if there is a direct relationship.

Abortion is always a very charged issue. Everyone has their religious or moral beliefs about whether or not a mother should have the baby or not, but this article seemed like it touched on more than just pro-choice or pro-life. I agree with having better sex ed and trying to teach abstinence to teens, but realistically, not everyone is going to choose that route. Promoting safe sex and tightening up on abortion policies seems like the way to go. This article sounds like it was well researched and written by someone who wants to see change.

I also like the fact that someone wrote an un biased article on such a touchy subject in today's society - many writers always throw in their opinion on these kinds of articles and give you no other options. It seemed like it provided lots of facts and was very informative.

I think a key factor in this article is the mention of the drug used to terminate a pregnancy within the frist week. While abortion rate may be declining the fact is babies are still being killed just in a different way. To me having an abortion and taking the drug are the exact same thing because they have the same result; therefore, abortion rates really are not decreasing very much.

The author did a great job at conveying the information to the reader witht a un-biased approach. However, I would have liked to recieve more information on the new drug mentioned and whether it was included in the statistics about the decline in abortion as an abortion or not.
