Ban cell phones while driving

Ban Cell Phones While Driving
Advocate pg.6B, 4-28-08
Danny Church
The author wants the government to ban cell phones while driving. He explains that a State Representative has proposed a bill to make it illegal to use hand-held cell phones, but he does not think this is good enough. The author wants the Legislature to ban hands-free cellphones also. He quotes results from studies that prove it takes at least twice the brain power to make up the power you use to have a conversation. He makes a good argument by stating his claim, telling what is being done now, and evidence to support his claim. At the end of the article, the author says he contacted his Senator, and we should do the same to make them listen to us.
I liked this article. The author makes good points. He could have put in a story to play on reader's emotions. However, he presented a good argument without a story.

I think it is very true what he says. I am so distracted when driving while on the phone. However, I don't think a law will ever prevent people from using their cellphones-sometimes you need your phone for emergencies. There is just to many ways to get around the law.

As a subject, this is something that has been around for quite some time. The cell phone/driving proposals have been public debate since before 2000 and will probably never die. Personally, regardless of how long they stay around, I highly doubt cell phones will ever be legally banned while driving.

As far as the actual subject matter goes, laws like this fall into the "slippery slope" category and thats why they never fly. If the government can ban cell phones, then where does it stop? Cheeseburgers are illegal but fries are ok? How about music over 65.7 decibels? 6 speed manual transmissions are too distracting but 5 speeds are fine?

In my opinion I dont think cell phones should be banned completely. I am willing to live with the hands free ban but I dont agree with banning them all together. People need there cell phones to get directions or to maybe check on someone. The author makes a good argument when he presents how much brain power is used when you have a conversation which.
