Obama's Misplay

The Washington Post
May1, 2008
Robert Novak

This article is about how Obama messed up by being associated with the old Reverand of his church. He finnaly cut ties with him recently and novak thinks this was a good idea, but took to long to happen. He thinks the damage may have already been dont to Obamas campaign and could cost him the democratic nomination. novak explains that what occured with the ranting Reverand scares some white americans, and may cause to stray votes away from him. Also discussed in the article is the reaction Obama gave that left many voters wantinga more firm stance on the matter. The author leaves open the possibility that even if Obama wins out the nimination that it is uncertain what new commenst could come out from the ranting Reverand. I think this article is pretty good. Its insightful and goes into details about the whole Obama campaign. Novak also leaves a good ending that kept my interest to see what will happen durring the rest of the campaign and potential presidential race.

  1. I agree that a connection between one's self and an evangelical while running for President is not a smart move. While this sounds like a good article, I can't help but wonder if the many articles like this are blowing this subject out of proportion. One thing I haven't been hearing said in these articles though is, what does this whole ordeal actually mean about Obama? He did do some religious shuffling simply because of news induced pressure. Does this mean something about his competency as President? Does this show personality traits, perhaps negative, that we haven't seen before?

These questions aren't meant to cast doubt on Obama or be biased, but its an issue I would like to hear other opinions on and would like others to think about.

  2. I am not very familiar with the comments that the reverand made but they do not sound good. I like how the author explains that Obama may have cut ties with the revrend to late and this may hurt the race. Every candidate has something bad said about them so this article probably wouldnt have effected by decision of the race. The author does not seem bias and does not give his opinion of the other candidates.
