Oppose bill on age to buy cigarettes

Oppose Bill on Age to Buy Cigarettes
Advocate pg. 4B
April 7, 2008
Errol Broussard
The purpose of this article is to convince readers that state Representative Walker Hines is limiting our rights by trying to change the smoking age to 21. The author expresses disappointment over the fact that the drinking age went up to 21 when he was only 18. Now, he wants to help preserve our rights by getting people to e-mail Walker Hines. The author gave Hines' email address and urges everyone to remind him that he should not try to limit our personal choices.
I did not like this article at all because of the third sentence. "Walker Hines may be trying to making Louisiana a healthier place to live, and that is admirable, but this is the wrong tactic." I am hoping that "trying to making" is just a typo, but either way it changed my mind about this article. Also, the author didn't have any hard evidence. It seemed like he was just upset that he couldn't buy alcohol at 18. The author did not convince me to e-mail Hines, but he did make a good point that smoking is a personal choice and should not be limited.

  1. Grammatical errors in articles definitely make them less credible. I think giving out the representative's email address was a little ridiculous; he should have tried to make the audience so enraged that this man was taking away our rights that they wanted to look it up themselves. This article just sounds like a hastily made letter by an angry man.

  2. It sounds like the author is a little kid who is waiting to turn eighteen. His points do not have any evidence or facts, which makes everything he says hs own, not researched, opinion. I wouldn't have e-mailed Hines either.

  3. The author in this article sounds ridiculous, and unreliable. He comes off mad and childish and shows no signs of research or factual information. If the author would have backed up his emotions with supporting evidence this could have been a very convincing article. I also agree that giving out the represenatives e-mail address was stupid desperate.

  4. I don't think the smoking age should even be raised because kids are still going to smoke if they want to, just like the drinking age. People would still drink as much as they do if the drinking age was raised. This author is saying that because the drinking age was raised from 18 when he turned 18 he wants to get revenge. This article doesn't sound like a good place to get information because of its mistakes and shady backstory.

  5. I thought that things had to be proofread before they were printed. His grammatical error made the entire paper look less credible. I don't think that the smoking age will be raised at all. There are too many men with fat pockets that are involved in the tobacco industry and government.
