"When Mom or Dad Asks to be a Facebook 'Friend'"

The Washington Post
March 6, 2008
Lori Aratani

Facebook, originally designed to be used by college aged kids, now can be used by anyone, including your parents. This article talked about this new issue. It is an issue right now allowing parents and older people be a part of facebook. In fact, my friends and I were talking about this the other day. This article begins with a personal story of a teenager being friend requested by his father. Then she gives examples of two people with opposing views of the issue. This article was very well researched; it discussed the history of facebook and things such as different groups that have been formed against this new change in facebook. It also discussed the positive aspects of this new facebook change, such as older adults staying in touch with each other and coworkers being able to keep in contact. The research given was presented in an unbiased way; it was a very well written article.

This seems like an interesting article giving two points of view. It is good that parents and co workers can stay in touch with each other, which is what Facebook was intended for. However, it might be a conflict for some college kids who greatly appreciate their privacy from their parents.

This sounded like an article that could keep my attention, and one that I would continue reading. As I can also see both sides to this arguement, I appreciated that the author presents two viewpoints, as this issue has no right or wrong answer.

I do not think parents should be allowed to have a facebook. You know they only want to get one to spy on their kids and see what they're doing. If they are using it JUST to keep in touch with their older friends, then I can see how it would be a good thing for them to have a facebook, but I think most of them have an ulterior motive.

While I wouldn't love for my parents to have a facebook, its an online networking site and Mark Zuckerberg can do whatever he wants. If he wants parents on there and I don't like it then I guess I would just have to get off. This is definitely an interesting article that I would imagine appeals mostly to the more youthful crowd. I will definitely keep my eye out for any more articles about this.

HAHAHAHA! I think I might get a Facebook just so I can talk to my mom. I think some parents migt use this as a way to spy, but I know my mom recently got Myspace because its the only way she can get quick pictures of her grandbabies in Missouri. Can't we all just get along?

Facebook issues are becoming very popular and very controversial. In my opinion there are both postive and negative aspects about facebook; however, i find it hard to think of a positvie reason for your mom to have facebook. When someone has kinds and a family I don't think they should spend there time on facebook.
