A Foolish Immigration Purge

New York Times
March 27, 2008

This article talks about how the Bush administration decided to fire employees whose names don’t correlate with the Social Security database in order to tackle the immigration system. In doing this, workers are fired assuming they are illegal immigrants even though they may be in fact American citizens. Seventy percent of the 17.8 million records that do not find a match are actually American citizens. Name changes, misspellings, and mistranslations lead to mistakes in this system. Companies are given about 90 days to fire these workers who have no name match or clear up the errors. These companies face the hard decision to keep a good worker with a no name match and face government fines or fire the worker and face discrimination claims. This article was very well researched and informative. It contained many facts, references, and statistics. The author seemed credible and knowledgeable, not using too big of words.

Although we do need an immigration crackdown, I think this purging of immigrants would be a little absurd. This article appears to present good well researched information. I'd like to hear more about this purge that the Bush administration has started.

Oh my, I cannot believe that something like this is going on. While I too think that something needs to be done with the amount of illegal immigrants that are entering this country, this method is not credible. This method is only going to anger the American people, and cause trouble than it will help. It is causing the employers trouble also, as they are forced to doublecheck to make sure that the person is in fact an illegal immigrant. A more well thought approach should be taken, as this will only cause more trouble.

I agree that this idea put on by the Bush administration is a litlle absurd and out there. I think that while something definately needs to be done in regards to this issue, this specific idea is not the best. I think that this method will only worsen things.

I think the Bush administration is getting desperate, everyone keeps saying something needs to be done about illegal immigration; so this is their solution. It's not right, they should work a little harder to crack down on the ILLEGAL immigrants, not ALL immigrants.
